"Transcriptions, Abstracts and Extracts"
Sandy McKenny is a founding member, past president and current secretary of the Vista Royale Computer Club which operates a computer lab for its members. Visit www.vrcc.info to use the genealogy page which has links to help with your research.
Sandy will cover the differences between transcriptions, abstracts and extracts, and why we should consider transcribing a project or treasure when we find one. Learn the types of materials and how to acquire them, plus tips, tricks, hazards and examples.
This meeting will take place in the large meeting room, 1st floor, Indian River County Main Library.
2018 IR Genealogy Conference
The Indian River Genealogical Society and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Family History Center are pleased to announce the 2018 Indian River Genealogy Conference. This conference will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse located at 3980 12th Street in Vero Beach, Florida.
In-person registration opens at 8:00 am and is free. Pre-register to have access to conference handouts prior to the conference. (Handouts may be accessed after April 1st.) To pre-register, go to https://tinyurl.com/IRGC2018
. Pre-registration is not required to attend but is encouraged.
The conference schedule includes four concurrent classes during each of five 1-hour sessions. The classes are appropriate for beginning to advanced family historians. One-on-one consultations to help understand DNA testing will be available as well as personal assistance in the Family History Center. More than a dozen exhibitors, door prizes, and material from a variety of organizations will be present in the exhibit hall.

Introduction to Genealogy Class
This class for beginning researchers consists of three sessions. Sessions I and II are held in the History Room on the second floor of the Indian River County Main Library. Session III is held in the Genealogy Department on the second floor of the Indian River County Main Library.
Session I is a lecture on gettting started -- how to record and organize your facts; how to search for additional information; how to find and use available resources.
Session II is a lecture and demonstration -- how to find information on the internet and learning to use the library's genealogy department resources.
Session III is a hands-on session using the library's genealogy department computers to search online for your ancestors' records and other information.
The March class will be held March 10, 17, 23. The April class will be held April 14, 21, 27. These classes are generally held monthly.

Upcoming General Meetings
We meet monthly (September through May) on the second Tuesday of the month at the Indian River County Main Library in Vero Beach, Florida. The meetings begin at 10:00 am. A program/speaker follows at 11:00 am. Meetings are open to the public and free of charge.

Indian River County Obituary Index
This index contains more than 118,000 names for obituaries appearing in Indian River County, Florida newspapers from 1913 through the present. Microfilm copies of of the newspapers are available at the Indian River Main Library in Vero Beach, FL. Go to the obituary index.
Visit our revised Surname database
listing hundreds of surnames which are being researched by current IRGS members. With this new feature, individuals interested in making an inquiry can send an email directly to the member who is researching the name. The member's name and email address are not visible to the person making the inquiry.
Members can now access an index to the Indian River Genealogical Society Newsletter. Go to the Members Only tab. Click on the second item "Newsletter Index". You can access issues from 2007 forward in the Members Only section. Earlier issues are located in the Genealogy Department at the Indian River Main Library. We appreciate the diligent efforts of Aurie W. Morrison in making this index possible.
